Now THAT'S the American Dream

Sometimes I can get pretty overwhelmed.

By what, you ask?

Oh, well, everything.

As you get older interesting things happen, and I don't mean those lines around your mouth. What might have once overwhelmed you, things like making sure you have on just the right outfit or turning yourself inside out to get a mean person's approval, well those things oftentimes fade away. You're comfortable in your own skin, satisfied with who you are. Victory, right? In a sense, yes. It is a victory.

But other equally annoying things crop up in their place. Thoughts like, 'Damn I'm old, I need to buy a house!' and 'Did my friend just say her kid's in junior high? Do I even have any eggs left in the basket?!' Yeah, those annoying things. Thankfully the only eggs I'm thinking about right now are the ones I missed out on at Easter. But the house thing? I'll admit: I wouldn't mind my own personal space.  Free from neighbors who help themselves to my barbecue just as I'm about to barbecue. True story.

One of Southern California's saving graces is its apartments. A lot of them are chock full of character, and you can't help wanting to move every couple years when one of the good ones comes up for grabs. Remember this place? I've kept an eye on it since I first spotted it about 5 years ago. It has now been for rent for 2 months, so the other day I caved and stopped by to check it out when I saw the sign: No Pets. What do you mean NO PETS? Don't these people know cats are family? Fa-mi-lee.
There it is. Big windows waiting for my white couch just inside...perfect cat sunning perch.
Obviously someone else wasn't feeling the 'No Pets' hate because they turned that sign upside down.

Red Denim and Lace

Lately almost every time I go to put an outfit together I'm faced with the reality that my wardrobe has begun to resemble what hung in my closet in the late 80's/90's.  Truth?  I'm not sure how I feel about it.  More often than not I'm tossing on a few outfits before finally settling on one, and somewhere in the process there is mumbling about Madonna.  Maybe some things are better left in the past?  The influence she had on fashion then--and consequently now--is undeniable.  When I see Lourdes running around in lace, droopy crotch pants and hightop sneakers it especially hits home.  Man it's crazy how fast time flies.

In any event, it was great to don my red denim again last night.  The biggest challenge I have with them is not enough tops.  Fortunately I was able to snag the best long sleeve lace top at Forever 21 back on that wonderful day when the lace blazer and I found each other.  I'm not one to be wearing a sheer lace t-shirt so I just layer a thin black tank beneath and head out.  Works perfectly.  Even better?  Remembered these awesome Steve Madden platforms I stalked down about a month ago...all sold out nationwide when there they were in Kentucky for about $30.  The last pair.  In my size.  Kismet! Just in time for the weekend.  Here's to a great one.

Cool, right?  He killed it on the camera last night.

And with that I bid you farewell until Monday.  Oh.  And just wait until I tell you about how Target is refusing to allow me to return an online purchase or even print up the online receipt to provide EVIDENCE of purchase (aside from the box it was mailed in, all the packaging, and the packing slip with my name and address on it *cough cough*).  Does anyone have any contacts higher up over there?  I'm at the end of my rope and just want a refund.  Ugh!!

Lace Blazer Creates Convert

If I told you how long I have been staring at this blazer you may or may not think I had been hypnotized.  In the past week alone it was gazed upon no less than 10 times per day *cue 'Too Much Time on My Hands*, yet for one reason or another I just couldn't pull the trigger.  In all honesty lace has not crossed my mind much since Madonna was, ahem, much younger--and even then I was more enthralled with the piles of bracelets climbing her arms.  Lately however I'm kinda transfixed.

Cut to scene and there I was on Friday night indulging in the weekly ritual of margaritas and chicken tacos with my friend Kelly who proceeded to use dirty words like, oh, Forever 21 right at the table.  I'm just going to out myself:  I haven't been in Forever 21 in 9 years.  Yes you read that right.  Everyone goes on and on about Forever 21 and all I'm thinking is, 'I turned *cough* 25 last year so that one is out of the question."  Well friends, I would like to formally announce that as of Saturday at approximately 12:30pm PST I am now 21 again and it is feeling pretty good.

Kelly coerced me to a monstrosity of a Forever 21 that resembled a mini department store.  She's very sneaky too--after 15 minutes she had to depart, abandoning me in a sea of what appeared to be 7 million females between the ages of 10 and 52.  Is this post littered with numbers or what? Anyway, 2.5 HOURS later I emerged with stars in my eyes, hair still in my head AND a jackpot of finds in my bag, not the least of which was an amazing version of that lace blazer I had been stalking.  Examine the evidence:
~Forever 21-Blazer (not on site yet, but similar here), Free People-Romper (tank version here),
Current/Elliott-Boyfriend Jeans, Steve Madden-Ruffled Leather/Wood Heel (last year?)
Yep.  That's the look of a giddy woman.
Drunk on lace and savings, if you will.
There she is close-up.  I'm normally an extra small but this came in small through large,
and I purchased a large to give it a boxier feel.  Rolling up the sleeves
worked perfectly and voila!
And on that note:  a big shout out to Forever 21 for making my lace blazer dreams come true.

Everything that happened before and most of what occurred after this purchase completely sucked (except the bbq with my friends you know who you are), but the blazer helped to ease the pain just a little.  Suffice it to say I will be returning to this mecca for further investigation.

Silver Shoes Set the Night on Fire

While closet diving (apparently several of us really love this term leading me to believe we could form a little closet hoarders anonymous group - except we might not be entirely anonymous, but who's counting?) this past weekend I became reacquainted with more than a few old friends.  It all started when Olivia Palermo showed up in those Sergio Rossi silver brogues 2 summers ago.  I swear it's all her fault (remember my new excuse? olivia palermo made me do it).  Of course I never could find her exact same shoes stateside leading me on a frenzied cat and mouse chase for a similar shoe that consumed my time for months.  Never give up.

Anyway, while up to my elbows in wardrobe overhaul 2010 I stumbled upon the shoes in their little shoe bag hanging right on the door I open and stare at daily.  Look around much, Carrie?  Thereby proving my point:  if you have too much you don't even know what you've got.  Immediate outfits began springing to mind:  leather leggings, chunky sweaters and the shoes; khaki bubble skirt (seen here), striped t-shirt and the shoes; rolled skinny denim a la my Isabel Marant obsession (seen here and here), striped t-shirt and the shoes.  A glimpse inside the mind:  {Pause.  I said striped t-shirt twice - I need to go buy one.  goes to computer and can't find one for less than $76.  Why didn't I buy that sale one for $19.99 at J.Crew??!? lamentations ensue.  I'm never going to find a striped t-shirt!! wah wah wah as full-on whining breaks out from inside the closet.}

Chef:  didn't you buy a striped shirt at J.Crew that time?
Me:  No *sniff*
Chef:  remember that time?  they were almost closing
Me:  NO!  Don't you think I'd remember buying a striped shirt since I'm looking for one now?!? *insert exasperated tone in here*

Suddenly I take a denim jacket off a hanger revealing said striped shirt.  Pride's a biznatch and sometimes you've gotta chew on it.

Me:  Um, you mean this one? *said in sheepish voice*
Met with silence and shaking head.
I'm still trying to live it down without a leg to stand on.

The Truth is in the Wind

I realized something when I went out yesterday evening.  I don't get enough time outside.  I haven't walked briskly in the open air along the trail by the beach in months (I used to do this almost every day).  When was the last time I read a book cover to cover?  I cannot recall.  And how about Pilates?  (something I used to love and look forward to just for the sheer joy of stretching and relaxing) Honestly?  I can't remember the last time I did a full work out or Pilates session more than a day or two in a row.  It's been months.

My heart sunk as I stood in the open, breezy air as people walked by with their dogs and each other or alone.  All the things I'm neglecting are healthy for my heart and soul in the most intrinsic ways.  They make me who I am.  When I was thinking back on all the fun tourists I've met out on walks...oh the conversations I've had and stories I could tell.  And books?  Books are some of my best friends!  I have been robbing them of my time.  Truthfully?  I've been robbing myself.  Of just slowing down and pointedly taking time every day to focus on living and thinking, not doing.

Do you ever feel like this?  Like you're just going, going, going and you know things are slipping, but then one day the weight of it all bears down on you in a passing glance, a visit from a friend, or the wind in your hair?  Things have got to change.

 Tonight I caught some rays.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.
I let the wind have its way with my hair.
I stood for a long time just looking out.
The railing was new (that never happens in my neighborhood)
and I felt sad that I didn't even know we got new railing along the path.
It was cool beneath my hand.
I might've walked a bit, but had on some 'not made for much walking shoes'.
But there's always tomorrow.
And that really encouraged me because realizing you have
time to make a change is just as good as realizing you
want to change something.

Hope your week is moving along smoothly and splendidly, but filled with enough time for you :)

You Can Ring My Bell (Bottoms)

When I think of bell bottoms my mind immediately fills with images of Farrah Fawcett in a form fitting track jacket a little more than half-zipped up and slightly high-waisted bell bottom denim with cute sneakers peeking out from beneath.  Suddenly a new image pops up with her in a blousy peasant top tucked into the waist of her bell bottoms - I can't see her shoes because the bells cover them perfectly but I sense they are wedges.  Then I'm blinded by her amazing feathered hair and bright contagious smile and I'm back in Charlie's Angels land...sigh.

But back to this post.

I'm a huge fan of bell bottoms - they take me back to my wee days when my way older and very fashionable teenage cousins were prancing around with the extreme bells and patchwork suede bags, while posters of the Bay City Rollers took up every square inch of their bedroom walls.  *I was "allowed" in those sacred places if I didn't touch too much or tell my mom anything I overheard, and they would paint my finger nails and give me their leftover junk to take home which was well-worth the rules!*  For months I have had been waiting to find just the right pair for me.  J Brand's Lovestory bell bottoms called out, but upon closer examination I didn't love the wide hem at bottom.  One day before wallet restriction set in I strolled into my neighborhood Gap and stumbled upon their Vintage Flare Jeans.  My trip to the fitting room was filled with jumping up and down and maybe a shriek or two because they are made from a super soft denim with just the right amount of stretch, have a normal hem at bottom and fit perfectly - snug in the leg to the knee and then moving into a nice bell landing just over my shoes at bottom allowing for the perfect bit of swish when I walk on by!

Despite the fact that it was 108 degrees at noon this past Sunday, we opted to go ahead with these outfit pictures.  Hence no necklace or bangles because they may have melted right onto my skin.  It was insanity!

I had fully intended to wear the jeans with my own track jacket
and sneakers, but 100+ temps = no dice.
Instead I opted for this peasant inspired linen tank. The print on
the top coupled with it's billowy flow gave it just the
right amount of boho-chic.
My cousin's patchwork suede hand-me-down bag is long gone.
aka massive loss.  (moment of silence please *sniff*)
Instead let's focus on how the denim fits snugly to the knee
before flaring over the shoe.
Here's a close-up.  When I walk the denim maintains the perfect length
showing just a hint of, in this case, my cloxfords (previously seen here).
This gives another example of the leg of the denim which easily
rests just over the tip of the shoe in ultimate bell bottom perfection.
These jeans are not high-waisted, but still maintain the overall
effect.  That being said, it would be great to find
a vintage pair that could showcase a high waist and a crazy belt
with a flowy top tucked in.  Le dream!

How about you ladies?  Are you a fan of the bell bottom or are some things better left in the past?
