Confessions of the Heart

It's late in the day, but I wanted to get this one up before too many days slip by and the magic wears off.  My kinda magic anyway.  I'll be honest:  I'm not much of a valentine-r.  We usually don't do much but wander around in public sarcastically calling one another 'Valentine' all day long (and sometimes for a few days in advance) much to the chagrin of anyone within ear shot.  It's actually mildly hilarious.  And of course there's always the chocolate, but let's face it - there's always the chocolate.

This year the Chef didn't work and this was all he said:
'Be here at 7.  You're going to pee your pants.  And don't bother asking - I'm not telling you.  Oh, and don't bother guessing because you've never had it before.'
I knew it would be food, but what could it be?  A chocolate covered chicken?  And on top of that something weird started to happen.  I started to get nervous.  Like it was a real date in the old days.  I mean we still go on dates, but they're usually pre-discussed types of dates so this was kind of fun. To get even palm sweatier, when I called to ask what I could bring he said nothing...that he had the menus printed up.  He printed menus.

Exhibit A:  The Menu

Without going on and on like a sentimental fool (and for the record I don't think those could possibly even exist) he came up with a menu that consisted of twists on several of our favorite dishes from some of the restaurants we've been visiting since even before we started dating.  Because we did dinner and a movie every Sunday night for about a year before he finally got the nerve to tell me he liked me.  The whole thing was really special and suddenly I feel like I understand Valentine's Day.

I'm not here to throw sand in anyone's eyes.  Believe me I've spent many of these alone - and while it really didn't bother me, some of my close friends did get kind of down so I do understand.  All I can say is consider this evidence that there are normal, good, decent guys still left out there...and some of them can cook!!

Tangerineade - made with tangerines from the backyard.
A version of my absolute favorite Luke's lemonade.
Grilled shrimp - we ate it with a curry aioli.
This one is a twist on curry infused shrimp tempura that is a total contraband weakness of mine.
I'd been requesting salmon so he did a version of one of my favorite salads:
heirloom tomato and watermelon, but placed the various ingredients
atop smoked salmon.  I may or may not have teared up.
Kale - I basically love kale in any form or fashion.
Here's the kale and gnocchi recipe from last year that people still send emails about.
Here it is sans the gnocchi.
And there's the Chef.  Yes 2 days in a row and I promised him I'd stop it now.
Midway through I said, "hey you're wearing the shirt from the first time you tried
to tell me you liked me."  He nodded and we both kind of laughed.
He's so sentimental-it's really kind of wonderful!
Oh and fyi - he's housesitting for his parents.  He does not have pink walls.

So that's about where the pictures ended because let's face it:  enough is enough and we had to get down to watching The Bachelor and laughing our heads off while continuing to consume course after course.  At the end of the day, Valentine's Day is really about doing something special with the person you love - even if it's your cat :).  Oh and p.s. - to anyone who thinks we have a kum bah yah...uh, we totally work each other's nerves on a regular basis.  It's the real world over here baby!

Gentlemen Seeking Bohemians

Geoff Heeter (right) and yers trooly BOTB.

Friends, by the time you read this, I will be far to the north, traveling with my old pal Geoff Heeter. We're on a several-day quest to add a bird to our life lists: the Bohemian waxwing. In case you don't know it, this is a species that's very similar to the smaller, more common cedar waxwing. But the Bohemian is a bird of the far North and it rarely ventures as far south as Ohio. Or across the international border into West Virginia.

This winter the Bohos seem to be popping up quite regularly in southern Canada and across the northern portions of the northern US. I've been following sightings on the listservs and it seems like our closest opportunity is going to be along Lake Michigan. That's about a 10-hour drive north of here—13 hours for Heets.

The Heets.

If you don't know Geoff Heeter, you should. He's one of the two dudes (Dave Pollard is the other) responsible for The New River Birding and Nature Festival held each spring near Fayetteville, WV. The New River festival is kept intentionally small to keep the quality of the experience high, and to permit the event to be held where it is—just minutes from great birding spots.

If you are not familiar with the NRBNF, here are a few words and images for your edification:

You get to go birding watching in places like this spot along the New River.

While you are in a beautiful spot such as the one shown above, you are likely to get a chance to see the hard-to-find Swainson's warbler.

And when you do, you may feel inclined to do the Life Bird Wiggle.

It's quite the charming and friendly, spiritually-enriching, fun-as-hizzle birding festival. The organizers and a great crew of field trip leaders go out of their way to make sure everyone is happy. You need to check it out.

Now back to my buddy Geoff Heeter.
Ziplining.

The Heets is one of those throw-back people—firmly grounded in the fieldcraft of outdoor adventure and rural living, who also digs technology and many of the trappings of modern life, such as Facebook and smart phones.

He knows how to run whitewater rapids safely in a raft. He knows how to make a primitive camp in the boonies. He knows how, when, and where to harvest ramps (and how to cook them up). He knows how to keep a string of pack horses from bolting when there's a mountain lion around.

He is kind to all animals.

And he runs Opossum Creek Retreat near Fayetteville, WV—a delightful bunch of cabins he built by hand using local timber. Opossum Creek is the epicenter of the New River Birding Festival. Heets is a really amazing person and I'm proud to call him my friend.

However the occasional hole does appear in Geoff's very impressive suite of skills.
Keith Richardson (left) and Geoff Heeter tag-teaming the grill.

Last spring at the traditional final night cookout for the New River Birding Festival, Geoff and his right-hand man Keith Richardson were manning the brand new, huge and shiny gas grill. They hooked up the gas and fired that baby up, turning to prep the meat for its fiery demise.
That's when acrid gray smoke began appearing from beneath the grill's lid.

Upon opening up the grill, these masters of outdoor cookery discovered that they'd left the owner's manual inside the cooking unit. Had it not been reduced to ashes, I wondered (aloud) whether or not the instructions read something like:

Congratulations on the purchase of your new grill. Please follow these instructions before use:
STEP 1: Remove this owner's manual before lighting the grill.

The ashy remains of the owner's manual.

When I realized that I need a little birding break, and I felt the urge to head north after Bohemian waxwings, I called Heets to see if he could join me. Happily, he could make it happen. And now, as you read this, we're somewhere in the northern reaches of Michigan, searching for Bohemians.

I'll be sure to let you know how the quest turns out.

It's Friday - Let Us Collect Our Winnings and Run Away

image via we heart it

Usually I would have a funny or sarcastic story, perhaps a yummy recipe or sassy shoe, but not today friends.  No instead today I have, for the 40948473653th time, a head cold that has rendered me exhausted.  So I simply leave you with a heartfelt thanks for such a great white denim-filled week.

What's on your agenda this weekend?  My customary Friday evening margaritas have been replaced with cold medicine, more green tea, and movies on the couch - it could be worse, right?  I mean on The Young and the Restless (guilty pleasure) Ronan could have perished during his liver transplant rather than disappearing moments after the organ was placed in his body.  Now I can hang in suspense wondering where he's gone off to in less than optimal soap opera health - just in case I'm still on the ol' couch come Monday - can you say couch sores?  In dim news Dallas Raines, the local weather guy, just sent up a red flag that we have approximately 2 weeks of rain coming our way starting Wednesday.  Isn't that special? Not really.  See?  This is what it's come to.  Delirium has set in and I'm just rambling on about nothing.  House arrest is not the new black.

Thankfully Valentine's Day is on Monday so there should be a truckload of dark chocolate in my future - hopefully yours, too.  Until then I wish you a relaxing and fun couple of days off.

Before I run, I mean go lay down yet again, a special congrats to Taylor from Curly in the City - she won the Brooklyn Thread giveaway!! Yay!  Thanks to all of you who took the time to enter.  Have a great weekend everyone!

Breaking All The Rules

Have you seen everyone's winter white challenge posts the past couple days?  Holy mother of pearl they've been off the hook!  Even though I've been hanging off the couch viewing through the veil of delirium it hasn't masked the awesomeness.  Nerd alert:  I love sharing ideas.

I also really appreciate all the kind words and well wishes you've left here.  This plague (thanks Anna) has left me knocked flat out and absent for most of the past couple days.  Yesterday I asked if it was Wednesday...er, not so much.  The Chef's been stopping by to make sure I've still got plenty of dark chocolate, pink grapefruit and broth aka my daily bread and all I seem to be able to eat.  At times like these I realize how lucky I am to have someone who cares about participating in my day to day - every day.

Like a couple of weeks ago when we went to the flea market
and the 85yr old guy at the Native American head dress booth
- who was wearing white sweat socks on his hands just because -
wouldn't sell me the head dress unless I
agreed to also buy the chaps and "pistolis" - wait for it -
...to go with the coordinating cowboy outfit.  Um, no?

What is a pistoli you ask?  A kid's plastic cap gun.  Actually a pair of them.  In between trying not to collapse over sock hands and the feather head dress I'd thrown on in effort to make my best plea (i mean really can you just imagine the outfit posts??  don't worry i haven't given up...), the Chef began bartering with the guy trying to talk pistoli.  At which time he accidentally shot off a cap and I had to fake bending down to tie my flip flop in order not to completely lose it.

White sweat socks on hands are also a faux pas fashion statement to be explored.  Perhaps we should do that challenge next...thoughts?

Bringin' the white denim action today we have:

Here's hoping I can somehow get mobile, bathe and get outside to have my post ready for Thursday.  Dancing on the edge yet again.  Argh

Monday was Hell. Rebel and Wear White.

I would like to begin by throwing up a big middle finger to photobucket.  How in the h*ll can you have 30% space one day and the next be at 10% over capacity?  I am so sick and tired of these hosting joints trying to take advantage of me (and likely others) to make a quick buck.  I deleted a ton of back up pics and STILL it won't budge.  As if I don't know what the tactic is.  Good luck with that!

On another note I would like to formally announce that I am sicker than I have ever been in my adult life, with the exception of the walking pneumonia that damn near claimed my life last year.  Monday consisted of the following:  get up, cry, go back to sleep, get up, drag down hallway, watch lung cancer survivors on Bold & Beautiful, cry, watch commercial about Lucille Ball dying from undetected heart disease, cry, pass out, wake up, sneeze 18 times straight, eat a chocolate, cry...I think you get the idea.  Finally hauling it to the computer to see photobucket wreaking havoc unnecessarily sent me right to the kleenex box.

Jalapeno Cucumber Margarita in the distance...
someday I will drink it  again.  Maybe today.
Straight out of the bottle.  Without the mix.
Please allow me a moment to dry my eyes.

On a 100% more positive note I want to thank EVERYONE who is taking part in the white denim challenge we're having right now.  I managed to sit up for 10 minutes yesterday and read your posts during which time I cheered (and cried some more) out of sheer glee!! I am loving the outfit combos and getting so many awesome ideas.  I don't give a rat's rear end...I wear those mother's year round.

Up today is:
I'll do my best to check in w/all of you later today.  Want to check out everyone's outfits and catch up on blogs, but not sure I'll be able to.  Must get mobile in order to have my post ready for Thursday if I'm not in the hospital.  Only kinda joking.

Doughheads

Blue jay.

The birds at our feeders LOVE the homemade suet dough we provide. We feed it to them in moderation, so there's no concern about them getting obese, lazy, or addicted, but they ARE often waiting just after dawn in the willow tree off the back deck. They perch there, shifting from foot to foot nervously, wiping a wing across their beaks as they sniffle, eyes glazed. Their mood is very anxious, jumpy. They stare into the house through the sliding glass doors. They are waiting for "the man." Some mornings it is "the woman." To bring them their "medicine."

These are the "doughheads."

The second we open the back door to start the morning feeding frenzy, the doughheads make a big show of flying away. But they only go far enough to be in a good position to swoop in first to the fresh handfuls of dough on the deck rail and in the hanging dough feeder.

Here are a few of the most avid doughheads.

Female red-bellied woodpecker.

Male dark-eyed junco.
