Paying it Forward

Dear Fellow Bird Watchers:

Now that spring is here, or will be soon, I have a suggestion for how you can help to make the world a better place. Consider doing this: Volunteer your time to lead a bird walk for kids or new bird watchers. There's no better way to share the joy of being a bird watcher than to help another human open his or her eyes to the wonders of birds.

Remember how you felt the first time you "sparked" on birds? And remember all the help you got as a new bird watcher? Birding mentors, bird club friends, and helpful individuals are the people that welcome us into the community of bird watchers, encouraging our interest and enthusiasm, sharing their knowledge, and—perhaps most importantly—inviting us along to go birding. Without those invitations, our interest in birds might never have blossomed.

Every spring, Julie and I go to the local elementary school and take several of the classes outside to look at birds. The school is in a rural setting, so all we really have to do is step outside and pass out the binoculars or set up the spotting scopes. The birds do the rest.

Last Wednesday, we took the school's after-school Science Club out for an hour. The results were awesome! More than a dozen species seen well, just a few steps from the playground, including some species and observations worth noting: The American kestrel pair is again nesting in the barn on the west border of the school. Six black vultures added further confirmation of this species' ongoing range expansion into our part of Ohio. An eastern meadowlark sang all around us, going from tree to wire to fence, marking the boundaries of his territory. And two first-of-spring sightings seemed to be our reward just for being outside on April's first warm evening: barn swallow and osprey.

It was a grand experience and the kids thanked us over and over again. We even had a few parents join us! Who knows? Maybe we showed a spark bird to one or two youngsters. And that is the whole point. I feel like I am paying back the kind souls who encouraged my interest in birds way back in the mid-1970s. Wow! That's 40 years ago! I'd love to think that in 2051 one of these kids—now all grown up to adulthood—might be inviting a group of youngsters out for a bird walk, remembering all the fun we had and all the neat birds we saw and heard.

It's the BEST time of year to be outside with the birds, folks. Being a bird watcher is one of life's most renewable gifts. Consider paying it forward, won't you?

Boho Bird!...A Post From A Special Guest

Hey everyone - I'm likely running up and down the stairs having my 14th breakdown about something not fitting through the doorway or up the stairwell.  During the moving mayhem, please welcome Shari from Little Blue Deer.  We've been blog pals since Shari befriended a bird that was just beginning.  I was immediately drawn to her wonderful pictures, aesthetic sense and sassy one liners.  Enjoy the special post she did in honor of my boho apartment dreams then pop on over and give her a high five!
--------------------------------------------------------

I am so delighted to be guest posting for Carrie at This Free Bird today!  Carrie is one of my favorite and oldest blog friends, I love her posts, they are so personal, it makes me feel like we're bffs, even though she lives across the country.  And that girl has a wicked sense of humor, too, she's also one of my favorite Facebook friends.  She and I share a great love for boho, ever since I saw her post that amazing cowhide rug from her bf, the infamous Chef, I knew we were decor soulmates.  I hear she is movin' on up to the East Side this week, so I am sharing some inspiration for her brand-new apartment.  Funny how when I find something cool on the side of the road and bring it home, it looks like, well, something I found on the side of the road, but when Anthro does it, it looks all boho chic.  So here's to boho at the Bird!

I mean really.  Big Edie/Little Edie anyone?  I'm about to peel some paint off the wall right now...
Shari went and ready my mind.  Chipped yellow table puh-leeze.

Shari - thanks so much for sharing your Grey Gardens visions with us today.  Girlfriend you need to bust it over to Southern California so we can sip tea out of rusty cans while wrapping our hair in scarves and digging through every flea market within a fifty mile radius to recreate the dream.  That goes for the rest of you, too. In the meantime please do have a wonderful weekend.  Think of me beneath a pile of boxes. I've fallen and I can't get up.

Fitness Giveaway

I'd like to tell you a wonderful story about how all my papers are in a row for today's tax appointment, but guess what?  You probably know where this is going...they're not.  Monday went like this:  work work work, talk to landlord, tax tax tax, show apartment, take 14 calls for work, let 5 more sit in the voicemail to show the apartment, tax tax, show the apartment while trying to mask terror of the possibility of 20lb dog and baby hanging off young girl's hip as potential neighbors, and so the day went on.

In the midst of all this it struck me while talking with a mentor of mine who first encouraged me to blog, but that I hadn't revealed the blog to just yet, that this thing is almost a year old.  I truly appreciate every person who takes the time to read my posts.  They're longer than most, not done with fancy camera techniques, and laced with crazy stories.  It's so nice to still see readers who have been with me since the very beginning and vice versa.  So in honor of the anniversary approaching I'll be doing some giveaways throughout the month as a big yahoo and show of appreciation.

As many of you know there is a group of us - about 20 or more now - working our way through Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred.  It has been a huge help (at least for me anyway) to have the support of this group encouraging me to keep going.  My right leg is throbbing as Level 2 Day 1 passed completion...I see change and am going to put that thing to bed if it takes me 45 days.  In honor of warm weather aka shorts season the first thing I want to give away is:

The more the merrier (or is that misery loves company?)
This thing works...the dvd not her, but she does too.
I've done it once before after completing the Shred and was really happy
with the results so want to share the love.
Especially seeing as I plan to do it after the Shred and am looking for commiseration partners.

Also included in this giveaway will be the DVD version of
Pilates from the Inside Out by Karon Karter.

I started doing Pilates at home watching Karon on the Veria Channel.  At first I was all, "what the hell?  this isn't going to do anything". Famous last words yet again as 20 minutes later my legs and upper arms were on fire.  It is a total body workout that is so calming, yet completely sculpts the body.  It requires you to clear your mind and focus on your body, how it is moving and your position whether on the mat or standing up.  Pilates has taught me how vital it is to have a strong core of back and stomach muscles - and it eases my body tension when I do it alongside Jillian's workouts.  I'm really excited to share her with you...she doesn't call you buddy once.

DETAILS
*This giveaway will include one set of each DVD and is open to all readers. The entry period will run through 11:59pm PST Monday, April 11, 2011 and the winner (selected via random drawing) will be announced on Tuesday, April 12, 2011.

HOW TO ENTER
*For one entry:   this giveaway is open to anyone who reads my blog.  It's in honor of everyone who reads and follows along, so if you want to enter and aren't following make sure to sign up on the right and leave a comment including an email address where I can contact you if you win.  Easy as that.

*For additional entries:  you can blog or
tweet about the giveaway, and/or follow this free bird on facebook leaving a separate comment for each entry.

Good luck everyone!  Even if you're not a big workout person - actually especially if you're not - I think these are great to have in your library because they're easy to do at home and yield results.  More to come in the upcoming weeks if this one's not for you.  Have a great Tuesday!

Movin' On Up

You have no idea how that song's been playing over and over in my mind the past couple weeks.  For those of you who are unfamiliar it was the theme song from one of my fave shows back in the day:  The Jeffersons.  If George Jefferson's character tried even half the racial or male superiority stuff today, he'd be booted right off the tv.  Let's face it he wouldn't even get on in the first place.  Unless he was crazy like Charlie Sheen, but that's another story for another time.

No friends, today is the true story of me moving up to Level 2 of the 30 Day Shred (knees are throbbing and I think I pulled my achilles, but I managed to make it through) in the same weekend the landlord and I reach an agreement on the upper unit of the duplex I live in.  Now after last week's hell I realize  many of you may be thinking, 'giiiiiirrrrrl you just need to get out of there.'  And the truth is at some point I will, but summer is coming and I'd like to spend this one close to the beach.  It's tough to relo feral cats - even those that are semi-tame - at the best of times, never mind when the Chef is in full swing opening a restaurant.  On top of that I want a dishwasher, and this place has it.
It may seem like a little thing, but here in SoCal unless you live in a human filing cabinet (large apartment community) it's tough to swing a dishwasher.  So some of my dreams are coming true.

There's a great outdoor space above the garage right outside my backdoor.  Even though
it's a hot mess right now I plan to remove the debris, clean it up,
and the Chef will put his carpenter's hat on to build some built-in lounge areas.
Here's to days in the sun reading a book with SPF 7000 slathered on.
Morning tea, afternoon lemonade, and evening cocktails? Yes, yes, and yes.
Another big thing on my wish list was more natural light.  I've lived in this building
almost 6 years and have been fortunate enough to have only 2 different upstairs neighbors.
Anytime I visited them I noticed how bright it was up there.  It might be
a biznatch in the summer heat, but hopefully my A/C units + the cross breeze
will tackle it.  I sure hope so.
And there's a deck that runs the width of the building just off the living room!
My cats can have their own outside space and hop in and out easily.
Now to find a nice person for my current downstairs place...

I hope you don't mind me sharing the details - after last week I felt like I owed you some sort of update.  Argh.  And now I have to zip off and keep prepping the tax pile for Tuesday's visit with the accountant (is this over yet?).  In the meantime I hope you all had a great and relaxing weekend in the sun.  To those of you shredding, shred on!

Our New Name!

It is with great pride and excitement that we announce our magazine's new name: Wild Bird Watcher's World (and Blooms)! Here's the cover of the first issue, which is mailing out today. We can't WAIT to hear what you think.

As you can see, we're still publishing only the very best, most engaging content. We loved the name Bird Watcher's Digest but we feel our NEW name really captures what we're all about. And what you're all about.

Borrowing a page from Martha Stewart and Oprah, I'll be featured on every cover, doing what I love to do most: being on the cover of a magazine.

Stay tuned!

The Corner Restaurant - Update

I'm just going to begin by outing myself:  on Wednesday night after 30 Day Shredding I went to Sonic, ate a Chicago dog, 3/4 of a New York dog, two onion rings and half of a small unsweetened peach iced tea.  It was bloody good and I deserved it seeing as almost every day this week has been a living hell of saw noise beginning at 7am.  Last evening I took a spin over to the Chef's restaurant to eyeball progress (read:  make sure no one had snatched my Asian artifacts) and somehow ended up with a margarita in front of me at our favorite Mexican restaurant not long after.  A preview of Friday, if you will.  Next up:  Days 9 and 10 of the Shred done in one day to stay on track.

Hopefully on Monday I will have some sort of positive living situation scenario to report.  A girl can dream. In the meantime here's a little picture preview of what's going on with construction at The Corner (if you're interested follow me on facebook where I'll be posting more pics).  It's a hot mess, but has come so far in just a week.

Here's one of the Chef and my dad in front of the restaurant a few weeks ago...
so homesick right now and wish I could go home for the weekend.
Anyway.  Examine the roof.
And here's what the roof looked like last night at 7 o'clock.  Crazy, huh?
Now remember last week's post showed the booths.
Welp, sayonara ripped vinyl booths.
Here's a quick picture of bar status.
So happy he's decided to keep this hand-painted geisha (- lovely woman?) on the ceiling in the bar.
I think the community will appreciate it seeing as the restaurant has been such a landmark.
The picture doesn't do it justice - poor lighting and not a fancy camera,
but I'll get better ones of her along way.
You had to know it was only a matter of time before I made myself at home.
Here's hoping a little of this splashes your way this weekend.

Thanks so much for hanging in there with me this week.  It was a wild one with work, working at home, the construction and all the stress from dealing with the landlord over moving upstairs or not.  I'm sparing a lot of the dirty details, but let's just say it was not pleasant and my nerves are shot.  I could barely find time to think much less visit your blogs.  sigh  Here's to getting this situation resolved and either moving or staying put for now.  In the meantime I have to get my taxes together to meet with my accountant next week.  So much for that relaxing weekend.  What are you guys up to?

Note:  Not sure it's a geisha per se...only trying to describe. Thanks anonymous.
